What Customers Say About The Shining: Collectors' Edition (Collectors' Editions):

The Shining is not a fluke; Stephen King is just a boring author that doesn't understand the genre of horror. I decided to finish it a couple months ago and wish I hadn't. I read half of this book in 2008 and had to stop because I was so bored. Maybe these books were good back in the 1980's when horror sucked. The decision to finish The Shining led me to one of the gravest mistakes of my life; I read the book IT. I have heard so many people sing the praises of Stephen King that I figured the Shining was just a bad fluke and decided to read IT because of all the regards it has received. I won't go into the actual details of the book because they are way too ridiculous. Watch the movie instead; Stanley Kubrick actually had vision for this story.

It's the first time I've read it, though everyone knows the basic plot. What is a freshet (a stream). I thought this was very well written. Gavotte- a French peasant dance. I thought Jack and Wendy, in fact all of the characters, were much more richly portrayed than the movie. I enjoyed this a lot more than Kubrick's "Look What I Can Do" show off fest. I just finished the audio book. Lush (n).- drunkard.

Also, he is quite adept at turning a simile, though at times his prose can get a little flowery because of it. More favorites include: scut- a contemptible fellow; Luddite-early 19th century workman who fought against machinery by trying to destroy it. He himself admitted that he felt his prose was a bit too show-offy in this novel. I had to look up all sorts of words. I actually really liked this book, though I accede there isn't much "horror" here. Tine- prong (like of a fork).

King has an incredible vocabulary. What the hell does denuded mean (stripped bare). Triptych- a three paneled painting/carving placed side by side (ohhhhh that's what those are called). It is very forgivable though since he does such an amazing job.

i was a little disappointed. this book is really good. however it is not as scary as people say it is. but i do not regret reading the shining. it was still really awesome.

and as for Wendy, I did like her but she was not my favorite character.I really like the plot, a big empty hotel with 3 people living in it, that's a scary plot. With this book, you have to give it about 200 pages before it starts getting really.scary but still moves very fast, not like others books where it just jump right in.Stephen King did a really good job at writing this, it seem so real that I could feel the same terror that Wendy was feeling when "someone" was trying to kill her with a bloody mallet or when Denny went into Room 217.You should read this book if you like to be scared.( as I said, if you can't stand this kind of book, don't read it but if you can, READ IT. I finished reading this book late (and I mean LATE) at night and I couldn't slepp or go downstairs to get a drink because I so scared. This book is not for those who gets scared easily (and trust me, I am not the one who get scared easily but this book was able to scared me).I thought that Denny was so cute.( as in little boy cute).

When his father becomes caretaker of an old hotel, his visions grow out of control. and I thought that Jack was the most complex character in this book, I mean, Jack is trying to stop drinking and to be a good father and a good husband and to have the hotel drive him crazy.

) :DI give it 5 stars.Enjoy.

King's best, hand's down. Granted, I love The Stand and It, but you can't beat The Shining for pacing, mood and characterization. I just love the language in it, which is sort of an intangible. Better than the film.
